Build the Future of Interaction

VC Interoperability

We've created this challenge as part of the DIF Hackathon to prove the importance and advantages of building with an interoperability mindset when it comes to Digital Identity.

The Challenge

Raising the bar for Interoperability

In today’s increasingly connected digital world, the ability to verify credentials across different scenarios and issuers is crucial to ensuring both security and convenience. This challenge invites you to create a proof-of-concept solution that highlights the power of Verifiable Credentials (VCs) by demonstrating their interoperability and reuse across multiple contexts. The goal is to show how a single credential, such as a passport, can serve various purposes—such as travel and age verification—while also being issued by different authorities.

The Goal

  • Showcase Credential Reuse: Design a solution that demonstrates how a single VC can be utilized in multiple contexts. For example, a passport VC can be used for both border control and age-restricted access, reducing redundancy and increasing efficiency.
  • Enable Multiple Issuers: Develop a system that verifies credentials issued by multiple authorities. Whether a passport is issued by Government X or Government Y, your solution should be able to recognize and validate each credential for the same use case, such as verifying identity for travel or age-gated services.
  • Ensure Robust VC Verification: Incorporate secure methods to verify the authenticity of each VC and ensure it is being used in the correct context. The solution must be able to seamlessly verify credentials from different issuers while maintaining privacy and compliance.
  • Create a User-Friendly Interface: Allow users to easily select the appropriate VC from their available credentials based on the situation, enhancing the flexibility and practicality of verifiable credentials in everyday scenarios.

Why this challenge?

This challenge is aimed at demonstrating the practical, real-world utility of VCs in complex systems where different issuers and use cases intersect. By participating, you will contribute to the future of decentralized identity solutions, showcasing how VCs can bring new levels of security, efficiency, and flexibility to industries ranging from travel to access management.

Key Requirements

Things to consider

Decentralized Identity Management

Ensure your solution incorporates robust DID-based identity management to secure user data. By leveraging decentralized identifiers, tools can verify identity without compromising privacy, providing a secure foundation for your solution.

Issuance and Verification of Verifiable Credentials

Integrate the ability to verify verifiable credentials within the portal. This includes everything from educational qualifications to event attendance, enabling operators to make informed decisions quickly and accurately.

User-Centric Onboarding Interface

Design a user-friendly interface that simplifies the process for both users and operators. The tool should be intuitive, with clear workflows for credential management, role matching, and communication between parties.
